With a total retail area of 101,000 square meters and 224 stores, the Mall of Scandinavia ranks among the largest shopping centers in Scandinavia. Behind this €640 million project stands the French real estate giant Unibail-Rodamco, based in Paris, which is breaking new ground in many ways to position itself for the competitive landscape—including against online retail.
Among other things, the Designer Gallery was set up in order to attract new customer groups, in which smaller labels present themselves in pop-up stores. The heart of the shopping complex, however, is the 240-meter-long flagship mall, where many of the major international fashion chains present themselves with an eight-meter-high, two-storey façade.
The fact that customers entering the Mall of Scandinavia are stepping into a shopping center of superlatives becomes evident right in the entrance area: the Stockholm-based lighting designers WSP Ljusdesign and ÅF Lighting have staged the entire entryway with an impressive, dynamic lighting installation. For this project, the planners utilized 535 instalight 1060 in-ground luminaires, as well as 700 linear ceiling luminaires featuring LEDLUX technology housed in aluminum profiles. While the in-ground luminaires illuminate the entrance area from within the concrete paving, the ceiling luminaires—of equal length and positioned along the glass façade at a height of approximately eight meters—serve as a precise visual counterpart.
Last but not least, the filigree and at the same time robust design of the "instalight 1060" recessed floor light convinced the planners. All lights were manufactured in a special version that can be controlled in three sub-segments, each in the light colors RGB and white. On the one hand, this allows particularly finely resolved light animations, but on the other hand it also requires the synchronous control of around 15,000 data channels. During the entire duration of the project, InstaLighting guaranteed on-site support via the Swedish sales partner Kungsbacka Lighting. Thanks to the thorough preparation and detailed project documentation, the installation and commissioning of the entire system could be carried out independently by the local electrician.
Just in time for the opening of the Mall of Scandinavia, the entrance area shone in a very special light.
