Modern Literature Museum, Marbach

World-class architecture meets literary history

For David Chipperfield, the architect of the Modern Literature Museum, Marbach, “a museum of literature is something that hardly exists.” After all, literature cannot be displayed—it must be read. In Marbach, however, visitors can still experience the history and creative process of literature. The exhibition not only displays original documents from literary history but also conveys a fascination with language and stories through digital presentations for children and adults.

The museum is a real challenge for lighting design. Because the original manuscripts and objects are extremely sensitive to light and have particularly high conservation requirements. At the same time, colors and materials should be shown to their best advantage even in low light intensity.

In this setting, 260 Stratas spotlights from InstaLighting fully demonstrate their unique strength in terms of color rendering index. With a constant Color Rendering Index (CRI) of 98, Stratas lighting comes extremely close to the effect of daylight. With a variety of interchangeable reflectors, sculptural lenses, and 8-way louvres, Stratas shows the permanent exhibition in the best light and adapts effortlessly to different temporary exhibitions.

Last but not least, Marbach is also about the visibility of outstanding architecture. The building by David Chipperfield relies on openness and contrasts of brightness, darkness, daylight and artificial light as well as natural materials such as wood, shell stone and light-colored concrete. In order to work out these qualities, a particularly sensitive handling of light is necessary - which the lighting planners from Lunalicht Lichtarchitektur have implemented in a masterly way.
